The January 11 issue of the Journal UQAM featured Alain Janelle and his work on suicide prevention with the Atikamekw community of Manawan (link: Les Atikamekws s’accrochent à la vie - French only).

Presentations at the CRISE meeting on January 29.
 • Marc-André Dufour, psychologist at the Valcartier military base: "Entre la fierté et la honte: prévenir le suicide de monsieur tout-le-monde";
 • Nathalie Morin, research coordinator: "Prévention du suicide en milieu autochtone: considérations épistémologiques";
 • Brian Mishara, CRISE director, presented the challenges and opportunities for suicide prevention in underdeveloped countries, in light of the recent training he gave in Uganda and Guyana.
 • Danielle Saint-Laurent, epidemiologist at INSPQ, presented the latest statistics on suicide in Quebec.

 • Annette Leibing, anthropologist, professor at Université de Montréal : "Hétérotopies : espace et hypertension dans une favela brésilienne";
 • Jacob Amnon Suissa, professor at the UQAM school of social work: "Vulnérabilité, santé mentale et suicide en contexte de dépendances : repères psychosociaux";
 • Richard Montoro, co-director of The McGill University Sexual Identity Centre (MUSIC) : "Les composantes de l’orientation sexuelle et leur relation aux idées et comportements suicidaires".

 • Suicide Action Montréal has made available the PowerPoint presentations from its last colloquium, “Dangerosité suicidaire et bonnes pratiques”, held last November. You will find the presentation of Janie Houle, entitled "Vers une amélioration des pratiques cliniques et de l’organisation des services en prévention du suicide: quelques enseignements de la recherche".  • Several CRISE members participated in the XXV World Congress of the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) in Montevideo, Uruguay, in November 2009. Read a summary of their presentations: Conferences members.

 • In the Saturday October 17 issue of Le Devoir, Louise-Maude Rioux Soucy clarifies the issues in the future debate on euthanasia in an article entitled "Mourir, mais comment" (available online for subscribers and at the library).

 • Luce Des Aulniers, a professor in UQAM's department of social and public communication, gave a presentation titled “Fascination, limite, suicide”. You can read her related chapter on suicide in her recent book, “La fascination - Nouveau désir d'eternité”, published by the Presses de l'Université du Québec (PUQ) in its Health and Society Series.
• Marie-Louise Beaulieu Bourgeois, a master's student at Laval University's School of Public Service and a counselor at the Centre de prévention du suicide de Québec, gave a presentation titled “Expérimentation de nouvelles modalités de services post-tentatives adaptées aux hommes suicidaire” (pdf) - French only.

• Michel Simard, director of the Centre le Havre de Trois-Rivières, gave a presentation titled “La désespérance d'être soi: Impuissance et responsabilité”. You can read his related article “La ritualité et la désepérance d'être soi” - French only .
• Philippe Roy, a doctoral candidate at Université Laval's School of Social Service, gave a presentation titled “La négociation de la masculinité chez les hommes en crise suicidaire”. You can read his master's thesis on the subject (link) - French only.
Isabelle Marcoux gave a presentation titled “Enjeux éthiques autour de l'annonce du maladie incurable: une expérience française”.

Mathieu Gagné and Danielle Saint-Laurent of the INSPQ (Institut national de santé publique du Québec) present the latest statistics on suicide in Québec.

2009 Poster Award of the American Association of Suicidology
At the 42nd annual AAS conference held in San Francisco in April 2009, CRISE researcher Gaëlle Encrenaz received the award for best poster, "Lifetime suicidal risk and patterns of help-seeking: results from a large survey in the French general population".

Consensus between research and practice to improve suicide prevention programmes for men (French only)
A guide issued as part of CRISE's knowledge translation program to improve practices in suicide prevention among men is now available in French (an English version is planned for the future).

"Cluster suicides" and "Suicide Prevention and the Elderly" (French only)
Two new sections have been added to the Knowledge translation section.

Partners in suicide prevention (French only)
The community of practice presents its findings on problems and needs relating to collaborations between suicide prevention institutions in Quebec.

Preventing native distress (French only)
In the latest issue of the Journal l'UQAM (27 October 2008), there is a presentation by Michel Tousignant of the Wasena / Waseya project, on suicide prevention in native communities
