Daigle, M. (1997). No-suicide contracts in the correctional environment. Jail Suicide/Mental Health Update, 7(2), 7-9.

The idea of managing suicidal inmates through the use of no-suicide contracts ("behavior" or "psychological agreements") seems appealing and is even institutionalized in some correctional settings. In some places, it is even a routine and written procedure. All of us can understand the interest of practioners for these practices, especially those who deal with difficult and hard to reach clientele like inmates. Nevertheless, we have no proof of the effectiveness or even inoffensiveness of such a technique. That is why we have to stay very careful when using no-suicide contracts in jails, prisons, or penitentiaries, even more if we are not sure about what exactly is involved in such an arrangement.
